It's been quite awhile since my colleague and I had #hipsterfriday lunches, and today we decided to check out a new cafe My Awesome Cafe. While it's barely mid week, we decided we needed some fresh air and took a walk down Telok Ayer. Sometimes I think it's good to take a break, step away from the desk, inhale some fresh oxygen and come back to work with a fresh perspective.
Taking over an old medical hall, the cafe is located just down the road from Sarnies. There was a crowd when we reached, but we didn't have to wait long for seats for three. I couldn't really pinpoint the vibe the cafe was going for, it was a mix of vintage, old-school and perhaps a little quirky with high tools and tables made out of bright red pipes.
I liked that the cafe was fitted with a row of fans and the place was airy and cooling. Granted that it was really warm today, but it was refreshing to not be in an airconditioned room. Notice that the tables used were the familiar desks we used in school?
Service was prompt and efficient, and most of the friendly staff were caucasian. Between the three of us, we ordered the smoked salmon and avocado salad, the duck rilette sandwich and a quarter quiche which comes with salad. We also ordered two iced lattes and an iced mocha, and the total bill came up to $54, which worked out to about $18 each.
My favourite was the salad - it came with a generous serving of smoked salmon and i love avocado so score! The greens were also very delicious. The duck rillette sandwich was a little tough to chew in my opinion, and perhaps not the best item for sharing. We eventually requested for it to be sliced into three so it was easier for us to share. The quiche was also not bad, but a little too salty for my taste.
I was a little disappointed that they didn't really have mains like pasta on the menu, it felt more like a salad place. But no doubt the food was good, and I'll be back to try their breakfast and dessert, sometime during the weekend!

Symmetry
There are so many brunch places to check out and I hardly go back to the same place twice, much less thrice. But I always make an exception for Symmetry.
Granted the food is rather pricey and the cup of coffee is too small for my liking, but they (more than) make up for it with super delicious scrambled eggs and fluffy waffles.
Am always on the search for fluffy waffles which are perfectly fluffy, and I think I found it. It came with a dollop of peanut butter and nutella, along with some very sweet berry sauce.
The every first time I tried Symmetry was over a year ago, and each time I go back I never leave disappointed.
They serve breakfast all day too - what's not to like?

Ronin
Most of us are familiar with 28 Hong Kong Street for drinks, but if you're up for coffee and sandwiches instead, say hello to Ronin at 17 Hong Kong Street. Ronin is an infant at two weeks old, but they are brought to you by older siblings The Bravery and The Plain.
When we first stepped in, the place looked rather dim. Perhaps a good place for first dates! The service was great, they currently do not have a menu so the waitress was very patient in explaining to us the food and drinks available.
Personally, I'd still like to have a menu just so I've all my options laid out in front of me. The menu is currently in the works, so don't worry, this coffee and sandwich place is not trying to follow the bespoke cocktail concept where they surprise you with a meal according to how you feel that day.
We went during lunch hour and while the place was crowded, we did not have to wait very long for seats for two.
We sat at the communal table which could seat 8-10 people if my memory serves me right.
The waitress recommended us the Dirty Ronin sandwhich which contained sausage ham, eggs, cheese and some veggies. It was delicious, and I loved that the bread was fresh and crisp. They were also generous with the serving, the two of us were only able to finish half of it!
For our breakfast set, we added on avocados, mushrooms and bacon. It came up to $19 in total. Loved how fluffy the eggs were!

My colleague also got the brownie for an afternoon snack. I'm typically not a brownie person, but that was one brownie I enjoyed! Other colleagues who tried it also raved about it.

| Loved how they placed the bread in a cage-like container. |

Wheeler's Yard
If you're a fix gear enthusiast, you would have heard of Wheeler's Yard. If you're a fashionista, you would have heard that Burberry held a gig there for the launch of their new fragrance for men, Brit Rhythm.
Tucked away in a inconspicuous warehouse in Balestier, Wheeler's Yard is a place for cyclists to come together and admire the (very pricey) bicycles on sale over a cup of coffee.
The cappuccino we had was pretty decent and came with the old school biscuit with icing on top. They currently do not have the license to serve food and drinks yet, so you pay for your coffee via a tipping basis.
I love the use of the huge space, and it was pretty quiet on a Saturday evening. Until the hipsters find out about this place, that is.
